During times of uncertainty, many people lean into beauty and self-care as an antidote to stress, anxiety, or fear. Even before any statewide mandates, many beauty businesses voluntarily closed their doors until further notice to protect their clients and staff. And, with little information on a timeline for re-opening available, folks at home are taking matters into their own hands literally by cutting their own hair. Buzz cuts , which were already favored by celebrities like Amber Rose and Adwoa Aboah, have become a popular option, at least in part because they are the hardest to mess up.
Most hairstylists I've interviewed about at-home cuts used to suggest leaving it to the experts, but with this new normal, the pros are offering tips on how to confidently cut your hair in their absence. The problem with buzzing very fine hair is it can tend to make you look bald because there isn't enough hair to cover the scalp," O'Rourke explains. Buzz cuts require minimal equipment: all you need is a pair of clippers with multiple guards.

Though purists may disagree, the classic military crew can be considered a buzz because it can be done with clippers. Another longer buzz style, the brush cut is a close cousin to the crew cut.
The only difference is that while a crew cut is left square to create a flat-ish top, a brush cut is a little bit rounder and a little bit shorter, says Starkweather. The cool thing about buzz cuts is that as they grow out, almost every day brings a new style.
Using a guard to leave hair slightly longer speeds up that process. An undercut buzz is like a half-buzz: closely cropped on the sides and left long on top. There is no tapering or fading and instead a blunt line is left between the short and long hair, creating even more of a division. Like an undercut, a crop buzz does away with fading or tapering and creates a blunt line where changes in length happen.
The difference here is that the hair is left long on the sides down to the corners of the hairline to create the illusion of short bangs. Leave a difference of at least two guards to create a defined line.
Keep your beard neat with trimmings at least one a week and make sure to keep the cheek and neck lines defined. United States. Type keyword s to search. Today's Top Stories. How to Eat Like Chris Hemsworth. Getty Images. This is extra time, effort, and willpower.
Again, this may be partly down to personal taste. But at the end of the day, the more hair you have on the top, the better a buzz cut would look. Warning — my personal opinion coming up. Yes, that includes shaving the sides and back. However, this does need to be tied into the other considerations.
You may agree that shaving it all down would look better than buzzing just the sides and back. But at the same time, you may not be willing to sacrifice the time and effort required to frequently shave your head.
As a compromise, you may want to shave it all down now and again, or for special occasions. I saved the most important one for last. Your personal taste should always play a huge role when it comes to your own grooming.
Ultimately, no matter how many things you consider, it just comes down to what you like. You may love the Bruce Willis-esque shaved head as a style.
Or, you may love the military-style induction buzz cut. As you can see, buzzing down thinning hair on top can really work. But remember, there are different types of buzz cuts to choose from. The picture above is of an induction buzz cut. But if you had enough hair on top a crew cut could work very well indeed. It could still look phenomenal. But the question of whether a buzz cut would hide a bald spot or crown is a different matter.
The answer depends on how short you trim the buzz cut. If you were to trim a Number 2 or 3 buzz cut, chances are that the balding crown would probably appear more obvious.
