The computer has a PCI-e X16 port for a video card; it has a port for integrated video as well, but that is disabled if a video card is installed. The diskette drive interface looks like the one for the IDE, but they are not the same.
The only thing you can do with the connector for the diskette is plug a diskette drive into it. The Optiplex will accept any size SATA hard drive you can find to plug into it, except for the boot drive which has a practical limit of 2 TB.

I also like the fact it is a small chasis so we could actually transport it and hook it up to my laptops screen. She has to maintain sensitive files for work, so it's better not to have those files on multiple hard drives, not to mention proprietary software I have no direct experience with the small form factor but I've seen no complaints on this forum with regard to heating issues, provided the computer was in a location that allowed free air flow around the chassis.
The characteristics of the video will depend on the adapter card used. Most video display adapters available will handle either the wide screen or square monitors with no trouble. One thing to remember regarding small form factor machines is that any cards added will need to have a low profile bracket.
