They also all like lime added to the soil. Nasturtiums deter insect pests such as beetles and aphids. Garlic planted alongside cabbage repels insects with its odor. Sage deters cabbage moth. Chives improve the growth and flavor of carrots and deter aphids, mites and flies.

Rosemary and sage repel carrot fly. Leeks are thought to repel many flying pests including carrot rust fly. Dill is thought to protect against aphids and mites. Beans can provide more nitrogen to the corn. Sunflowers can act as a structure and a windbreak for the corn. Marigolds prevent nematodes in the soil over time. Pole beans are sometimes interplanted with corn, as they add nitrogen to the soil and provide structural support. Nasturtium deters aphids, beetles and bugs and improves growth and flavor.

Oregano deters pests in general. Sunflowers can provide a trellis and shelter for shade-loving cucumbers. Tansy deters ants, beetles, bugs, flying insects, as does borage , which is also supposed to improve growth and flavor.

Chives , onions , and garlic deter aphids and other pests by masking the scent of the lettuce with their aroma. Basil is thought to improve the flavor and growth of lettuce. Radishes can be used as a trap crop for flea beetles.

Poached egg plants Limnanthes , a wildflower, will bring hoverflies and other beneficials that eat aphids. Onions are thought to protect against borers, mites, slugs, and cutworms, as well as maggots of all types. Chamomile and summer savory improve onion growth and flavor. Chives deter aphids. Mint improves health and flavor. Nothing seemed to be encouraged or deterred. Nothing grew better or worse than it had before, there was simply no advantage, other than me not having to walk so far to make a pasta sauce!

Do you know why? Because, for basil to successfully repel flies from tomatoes, an absolute shovel-load of basil is required in your patch.

But who knew this? And how many of us think that this is the quick fix for all our garden woes? The best thing about companion planting is that it increases the biodiversity of your patch; that is, the variety of life forms in your garden.

Some of the greatest companion plants in my garden are those which have nothing to do with my vegetable patch, but are the awesome locally native trees and shrubs I have planted about the place.

Clever planning if I do say so myself has meant that my garden is never without blossom, and is therefore never without the array of critters that come with that: birds, pollinating insects like butterflies, bees, and native wasps , reptiles, beetles and all sorts of helpful garden buddies. By encouraging this assortment of good guys, my garden is almost completely without the bad guys, who never get a foothold in numbers that matter to me anyway!
